Art and Design teachers (Junior and Senior) at the IES Helderberg International School were impressed by students in both of their teaching groups who had for some time been working independently on their own creations in their sketchbooks or on other suitable grounds or surfaces. One of the students, Anthony (Year 6) had been eagerly filling sketchbooks as early as the age of two/three, before he could even write, whilst the other student, Ineke (Year 10) had also followed a similar path, starting at about six years of age when she discovered her passion for Art. It is wonderful to see this sort of engagement at such an early stage and one imagines that they will ultimately forge a career in the Creative Arts. This ethos underpins the Cambridge approach which encourages learners to be: • innovative • engaged • confident • responsible • reflective It is so exciting to see students automatically investigating, analysing, exploring and experimenting so early in life, as well as being critically and culturally aware in their personal responses.
