As their current Unit of Inquiry covers cultures and religions, the differences they have around the world and the perspectives they experience and share, the PYP 4 classes AT IES Hout Bay International School decided to bring the world to Hout Bay International School on “Culture Day 2021”.
Each student was given a country to represent, they dressed according to the culture in their chosen land and each one gave a presentation to the class (explaining the currency, traditions, clothing, food and celebrations from across the globe). They tasted delicious treats from so many places, the differences in texture, content and cooking techniques was amazing and the students loved trying out cuisines that they had never heard of before. From Ancient Egypt to modern USA, from the Philippines to Chile – from conservative to liberal ideas, they learned it all.
Each student explained a game from “their country” and they had a great time playing outside and enjoying the cultural delights that children around the world experience.
How differently we experience life, food, culture and religion. Jane Salvage & Bianca Budricks – IES Hout Bay International School, SA
