Cultivating a Curiosity for Medicine

Writer's picture: IES Schools South AfricaIES Schools South Africa

The Nursery children at the Hout Bay International campus spent some time learning all about doctors and hospitals, and what a fitting theme considering the current global situation!

They had many interesting discussions ranging from who works in the hospitals, to why we go to the hospital in the first place. Children looked at the protective clothing and equipment worn by doctors and why they wear them. "To stop germs from spreading" of course!

They watched short time-lapse videos showing how food becomes rotten over time and discussed why one shouldn't eat rotten food, as it will make you sick. The children were shown how to wash their hands properly to prevent the spreading of germs.

The very interesting themed week ended with children constructing their own ambulances with recycled materials and painting their creations. The ambulances were equipped with wheels, a red cross, and a siren. The pride the children displayed in their constructions was evident.

"Children are great imitators. So give them something great to imitate." - Joy D Jones
