Rangoli is an art form, originating in the Indian subcontinent, in which patterns are created on the floor or the ground using quartz powder materials such as colored rice, colored sand or flower petals are also commonly used. It is usually made during Diwali or Tihar, Onam, Pongal and other Hindu festivals in the Indian subcontinent. Designs are passed from one generation to the next, keeping both the art form and the tradition alive.
Year 3 students at the IES Helderberg International School discovered religious holidays and Diwali was first on the list. They successfully attempted creating their own Rangoli with coloured rice, whilst developing their fine motor skills. It is important to have a hands-on approach to learning, this being a good example of activities in the IES Schools in South Africa which broaden the global outlook on every day learning.
