Who would have thought twenty years ago, that the global village would grow as fast as it has, and who would have thought that within six months the virtual world would expand at the rate it has. It goes without saying that in the wake of COVID-19 the world of our children has certainly broadened, and its international nature has become more apparent.
A parent may have asked the question, why go to the trouble of choosing and international education system for their child. We would like to touch on four aspects which could invoke some thinking.
A Global Perspective
International schools invest in creating greater global awareness within students, providing them with the skills and knowledge to become active citizens in not only the immediate village, but also in the international bowl. International schools offer diversity and this enables students to connect with a diverse pool of people surrounding them, also making them culturally more aware.
2. An International Curriculum
The advantage of an international curriculum such as Cambrigde or the International Baccalaureate is twofold. Students are given the opportunity to study in a country outside of their home country. If the situation presents itself for a family to move to a different country or continent, the student can transition into a school which offers the same or a similar curriculum. An international curriculum also promotes innovative and creative thinking and application of knowledge.
3. Learning an Extra Language
International schools mostly offers tuition in English as main language, which crosses the language barriers internationally, adding to the national language offered by the international school. This gives the student the opportunity to learn an extra language. Often, and this is the case with IES schools in South Africa, an additional international language/languages are offered, i.e. French, Spanish or German.
4. Community
It goes without saying that belonging to a greater international community broadens the horizons of a student and enlarges their opportunities to grow within this community to what they set out to become.
IES Schools in South Africa offer the Cambridge Curriculum and the International Baccalaureate (IB) at the Hout Bay International campus. Tuition is given in English, with International languages on offer at the respective campuses, and in accordance with their language policies: Afrikaans, Spanish, German and French.
